Metal braces were the gold standard for straightening teeth for over a century. They are still popular today, but increasing numbers of dentists and patients are now turning to Invisalign instead. Billed as “the clear alternative to braces,” Invisalign uses a series of smooth, clear, medical grade aligners to gently shift teeth into the desired position.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign’s customized, removable aligners replace the brackets and wires of traditional braces. You will wear each set of aligners for 20-22 hours per day for two weeks, or as directed, and then change to the next set at home. We will see you for treatment monitoring just once every four to six weeks. Invisalign treatment typically lasts for 9 to 15 months, with a total of 18 to 30 sets of aligners, but the specifics will depend on your individual needs.
First, we will create a 3-D digital model of your existing smile. Then, we will morph the model to show you how your teeth will shift throughout treatment, and how they will look at the end. When you are happy with your new smile design, we will use the model to create your customized aligners.
Aesthetics and Comfort
No one likes to admit it, but first impressions make a difference. You may not want to flash a mouthful of metal at a job interview or on a first date. Invisalign’s virtually invisible clear aligners let you laugh and smile confidently.
Metal braces can poke and scratch the sensitive tissues of the gums, cheeks, and tongue, and having them adjusted often hurts. With no sharp edges or harsh adjustments, Invisalign is significantly more comfortable than braces.
With braces, we are in control. We attach them, adjust them, and remove them. We handle all emergencies, such as a loose bracket or a popped wire. You will receive a list of off-limits foods, such as whole apples and popcorn, and you will need to learn a complicated new oral hygiene routine.
With Invisalign, you are in control. We place attachments on your teeth and show you how to use your aligners, but it is otherwise up to you. When it is time to change sets, you will take out the old aligners and put in the new ones. You can remove your aligners to eat whatever you like and to perform your normal oral hygiene routine. We will check your progress, but you are in charge of your treatment on a day to day basis.
At one time, Invisalign cost significantly more than braces, but this is changing rapidly. With braces, you must add the costs of any cosmetic upgrades, such as colored metal or clear brackets, to the base price. You must also consider the fees for adjustments as well as emergency visits. Invisalign’s all-inclusive, easy to understand pricing model includes office visits as well as well as aligners.
Dental insurance is complicated. Some policies only cover braces. Some cover Invisalign as well. Some plans do not cover any orthodontic treatments at all. Our friendly office staff will help you understand your dental plan and your out of pocket costs for both options.
