Your Denture Questions, Answered

If you’re considering partial or complete dentures, it’s natural to have questions. Here’s what patients often ask about treatment, comfort and long-term results.

Are you a good candidate for partial or complete dentures?

Dentures may be recommended depending on how many teeth are missing.

Partial dentures are recommended when only some teeth are missing. They fill in the gaps and prevent your natural teeth from moving.

Complete dentures are recommended when all teeth are missing. There are two types of complete dentures: conventional, placed in your mouth after your teeth have been removed and the gum tissue starts to heal, and immediate, made in advance and positioned right after tooth removal, so the patient is not without teeth while healing.

How are dentures made?

In general, the steps for tooth replacement include:

  • Measuring and making impressions of the jaw
  • Creating models of the shape and position of the dentures
  • Testing the models to assess their color, shape and fit
  • Casting the final partial or complete denture
  • Making any necessary adjustments for the best fit
What are the benefits of traditional dentures?

Traditional dentures are a great option when all or most of your teeth are missing. Advantages include:

  • Affordable tooth replacement option
  • Fit comfortably in your mouth
  • Lightweight and natural-looking
  • No longer have to cover your smile
  • Address issues chewing and speaking
  • Regain your confidence
  • Prevent cheek sagging from tooth loss
  • Get your social life back

Traditional dentures have special care requirements. They also cannot be worn while you sleep.

What should you expect after getting dentures?

Your dentures will closely resemble your natural teeth, so you will not see a noticeable change in your appearance.

Minor irritation or soreness is not unusual. If the discomfort persists after a few days, schedule an appointment to see if any adjustments are needed.

Begin with eating soft foods cut in small pieces, chew slowly and use both sides of your mouth. Be cautious with hard and sticky foods, and avoid chewing gum.

Due to age-related changes and general wear and tear, your dentures may loosen over time and need to be replaced. On average, dentures can last 5 to 7 years with proper care, including:

  • Brushing your teeth after eating and flossing at least once a day
  • Rinsing your mouth with water or mouthwash to remove missed particles
  • Visiting the dentist at least once a year to have your dentures checked
